February is American Heart Month, a time when we are all encouraged to focus on heart health and cardiovascular disease awareness. According the the American Heart Association, cardiovascular disease, including heart disease and stroke, remains the leading global cause of death with more than 17.9 million deaths each year.
This month, we are highlighting an important item that can be a lifesaver in the workplace: an Automated External Defibrillators, or AED. An AED is a lightweight, portable device that delivers an electric shock through the chest to the heart. It can potentially allow normal heart rhythm to resume after sudden cardiac arrest.
According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA), most sudden cardiac deaths occur outside of the hospital. The presence of AEDs allows critical treatment to be provided much faster, dramatically improving the chances of survival. Because AEDs are easy to use, can be placed anywhere, and are relatively inexpensive, they are a great investment – especially for workplaces with high-stress or physically taxing work.
